Two Westchester fashion business owners are helping push the field forward to celebrate diverse models and brands.
Modeling academy Straight Walk Runway owner Shereena Delgado is proud of the diverse group of models she has worked with. Delgado helped many of them land big jobs this past week at New York Fashion Week.
"We are also a casting company, so a lot of our clients are production companies for New York Fashion Week. They book us to cast their models for their Fashion Week shows," Delgado said.
Model Damon Wilson said the business is evolving to include more models of diverse backgrounds. He said Delgado has helped him find his place in it.
"I walked in three shows. I came with zero shows, and I walked in three shows. So, she definitely has an amazing job networking with me and plugging me in with a lot of people," Wilson said.
Delgado's friend and mentor, Lauren Morris, of Loola Doola Boutique, said she has noticed a change on the design side. When she first started seeking shelf space in boutiques for her clutches, it was difficult.
"I've been turned away before because it was like, 'Oh, these bags are too fashion-forward,' but now it's popular to have an Afro-centric design or an Afro-centric print," Morris said.
Despite challenges of finding and keeping their own workspaces in White Plains, both women said they have no plans of stopping. They're adapting, just like the fashion industry is.
