The Department of Environmental Conservation tells News 12 a nearby quarry operator, Speyside Holdings, had a breach in a settling pond used to receive and treat stormwater runoff and process wastewater from mineral washing, mine dewatering and dust suppression.
News 12 first received a tip from a viewer about the discolored water after they saw a post about it with a video on Facebook. News 12 reached out to the poster, who gave permission to use the video, and reached out to the state for information.
The DEC says the plant ceased all water pumping operations on Sept. 27, and that no discharge was observed during a subsequent site visit. They say repairs were completed on Wednesday and discharges resumed.
An investigation is ongoing, including an evaluation of potential environmental impacts.
