A unique construction project finished up ahead of schedule on Thursday in Mamaroneck.
Contractors cut a home into nine pieces, and spent the week reassembling it down the block – about a half-mile away. This process recycles the house to save it from getting traditionally demolished and just tossed into a landfill, which could create up to 180,000 pounds of debris. The owners love their home so much that they didn't want to see it demolished - so they opted for the first-of-its-kind project in Mamaroneck.
All week, they have been lifting each section one at a time up on cranes and moving them with wires from the old spot to the new location.
Within a few weeks, the homeowners will move in and begin building another home on their old lot. Once complete, the house will completely work with electricity, water and sewage all hooked back up.
Neighbors spent Thursday morning stopping by to take pictures and witness the unique process.
