A single-family home on Nepperhan Avenue in Yonkers was heavily damaged by an early morning fire, leaving a family displaced – but safe.
Flames broke out around 6 a.m., starting in the upper levels of the home and quickly spreading into the attic.
The family inside said smoke alarms alerted them as smoke poured from roof vents. Everyone was able to escape safely, and no injuries were reported.
Fire crews arrived quickly and were able to contain the blaze to the home, despite challenges caused by the frigid temperatures. Officials say frozen hydrants made it difficult to establish an initial water supply, and crews also dealt with water pressure issues and spot flooding.
Con Edison responded to shut down a power line that was dangerously close to the roof, eliminating additional hazards. The home appears to be a total loss.
It was not immediately known what sparked the fire.
