Yonkers residents living in the building where a Filipina woman was attacked during a vicious hate crime last month say they feel unsafe.

The residents met with Yonkers police Wednesday to voice their concerns. They say the building is overrun with drugs and homelessness, which has been escalating for years before the attack.

Yonkers police say they've received 61 calls from the building this year - a higher-than-usual number for one complex. Police say they are committed to taking steps to increase security at the building.

Yonkers Police Commissioner John Mueller says most of the calls from this building are for quality of life issues but he's determined to restore safety.

"We stay on top of it. It's relentless follow-up and eventually, we'll get to the point where everyone is relatively satisfied," says Mueller.

The Yonkers police commissioner says he plans to speak with the building's landlord to talk about doing a security survey of the building, which could result in better locks, more lighting and additional cameras.
