Police in the Town of Newburgh say a 17-year-old boy is recovering after being shot during a house party attended by as many as 100 people.
The shooting happened early Tuesday morning at a home on Carter Avenue.
Viewer video shows officers with their guns drawn as they swarmed the street and took a suspect into custody. Police also deployed a drone to scan the area from above.
Authorities say the teen victim underwent surgery at St. Luke’s and is now in stable condition.
Neighbors say the scene was unlike anything they’d seen before in the quiet neighborhood.
“My husband was awake and he said he saw all the cops come out and the kids running… but it’s crazy. This is a quiet place,” said neighbor Daisy Flores.
Another neighbor described the street lighting up with flashing police lights.
“I looked out and there was a bunch of police cars down here. A statey down there and three or four cop cars up there,” he said.
Neighbors also reported seeing people running from the home, hiding behind trees and crossing through yards.
Uniformed officers remained at the scene for several hours, and a plain-clothed investigator was seen later in the day knocking on doors and speaking with residents. Police say the incident is not a threat to public safety.
Officials have identified the suspect as 18-year-old Keiyi S. Bascus, of New Windsor. He is charged with three counts of burglary and attempted grand larceny and is being held for arraignment.
The shooting investigation remains ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to contact the Town of Newburgh Police at 845-564-1100.
