A total of 180 teens were sworn in for summer jobs in Mount Vernon Tuesday that are sponsored by the city and Westchester County.

It was an introduction to the workforce for teens like Omari Hart, who will help run youth basketball summer camps.

"This is my first time working. As a first-time experience in the workforce, I think I'm going to enjoy it," he said.

The teens took an oath to be good citizens as they take on the jobs. Many of them will be working at youth summer camps, but some of them will be filling vacancies within the city that have been difficult to fill because of COVID-19.

"They fill in as clerks, they help to file, they help to organize," said Lauren Bacote, a Youth Employment service coordinator.

Bacote added the roles are critical and may lead to full-time jobs.

"We've actually had young people who have been hired within City Hall who have started with our summer youth employment program," she said.

Starting wage is $10 an hour. Some teens can make up to $15.

"I'm probably going to start my savings for college – you know, invest in my car," said Jada Robison, a rising senior.

The program will start on July 6. Employees will work through Aug. 13.
