The search intensifies for the driver who hit a father and his 12-year-old son in a Yonkers parking lot.

"He was just hysterical and crying," said a Mount Vernon woman, whose husband and son were struck in a hit-and-run.

"In the blink of an eye, your whole world can change."

News 12 is not identifying the woman or her family.

On Saturday afternoon, she says she was at the Cross County Center with her husband and two kids. She says they were in a nearby parking lot, when her son, who has special needs, and her husband left the car to check something out briefly.

She says the two were holding hands as they walked through the parking lot when suddenly, they were struck.

"As they were crossing the street, crossing in the crosswalk my husband and my son, they got hit by a car," says the woman.

This woman says the car came quickly from the side and took off fast.

Her son was brought to the hospital to be evaluated.

She says for the most part, physically, they are OK but emotionally, not so much.

"It has definitely taken a toll on us. It was very traumatizing for my son," the woman explains.

Police say they are looking through security footage and trying to track down the driver.

Officers believe they could have been in a dark gray SUV.

"I drove over there to go home, there was a lot of cops. There was an ambulance just pulling up," says Yonkers resident Xavier Ayala.

Ayala was nearby when it happened.

"I wouldn't want to go through that, I wouldn't want anyone to go through that so my prayers go out to them," Ayala tells News 12.

People who live and work in the area are hoping the driver is caught soon.

The same goes for the family at the center of it all.

"We need to get someone like this off of the streets," says the Mount Vernon woman.

Officers with Yonkers police say they are investigating.

If you know anything about what happened, you're urged to call police.
