The Archdiocese of New York says it will close six elementary schools in June, including one in the Bronx.

St. Pius V is one of the Catholic schools slated for closure due to declining enrollment and higher operating costs. Under the archdiocese?s plan, several schools will also be merging, including St. Frances of Rome School and Saint Anthony?s School. The archdiocese says the school will be located at St. Anthony?s facility because the building is newer.

The archdiocese claims all the affected students will be assured of a seat in another Catholic school nearby. There is no word on what will happen with the teachers.

Parents and students of the chosen schools say the change will not only affect their lifestyles, but also the surrounding neighborhoods. Many fear vacant buildings will bring trouble to the area. Most parents say they are unhappy with the mergers and closures and want the archdiocese to rethink its decision.
