More Bronx elementary and middle school students are passing state math exams, according to results released Tuesday by education officials.
About 76 percent of third-graders passed in 2007, compared to 68 percent in 2006. For fourth-graders, the percentage rose to 65 this year from 62 last year. Nearly 10 percent more fifth- and sixth-graders passed this year. Seventh-graders saw the biggest jump this year with 43 percent passing compared to 31 percent in 2006.
Eighth-graders also improved with nearly 32 percent making the grade. However, officials say the numbers are not where they need to be for that grade.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg credits parents for the changes. "They've spent many patient hours helping children do homework and master the concepts. Parent involvement is critical," he said.
State education leaders said the figures are promising and they expect more students to pass in the coming years.
