A hazardous morning commute Thursday was just a tease of what the borough is expected to see this weekend and parts of next week. A slushy inch of snow, compacted by sleet and freezing rain, and washed away by rain, made for difficult travel conditions before 10 a.m. Luckily with temperatures safely above freezing this evening and tonight, minimal ice concerns are expected on roads and sidewalks. Any untreated areas with slush will remain slushy and slippery.
A brief break in this parade of storms is expected Friday, but it will be back to blustery with 30 to 35 mph gusts starting during the morning commute. It will feel like below freezing because of the wind, and feels-like temperatures will remain in the low-30s through the day. The wind backs down and clouds return Friday night. It is a cloudy and dry daytime on Saturday, as the next storm waits until after 6 p.m. Snow showers return through the evening, developing into steady snow by 9 p.m. Heavy snow bands are possible approaching midnight, which could exceed one inch of snow per hour. Depending on the exact storm track, the threat of ice returns around midnight through Sunday morning. The latest trend has been for a colder storm track, meaning mostly snow. If the track shifts back north, then sleet and freezing rain will cut down on snow totals but increase the threat for dangerous travel with a glaze of ice.
If the current trend of a colder storm continues, expect closer to six inches of snow. If mixing occurs, which is still anticipated as of Thursday night, expect about three inches, with less at the immediate coast.
Heavy precipitation tapers to lighter showers after 5 a.m. and completely shut off before 10 a.m. Sunday will see sunshine return before the Super Bowl. Another brief break into Monday before another storm arrives midday Tuesday. With more cold air and a potentially even stronger storm looming, this could produce the potential for over six inches of snow. A snow forecast for this storm is way too soon, and Saturday's storm track will impact Tuesday's track.
