Deerpark Town Supervisor Karl Brabenec has officially resigned from his voluntary position as a town marriage officer, citing religious reasons linked to the new gay marriage law. Brabenec said his beliefs as a Roman Catholic prohibit him from performing same-sex marriages, which can legally start on July 24. "I felt that if I didn't agree with the policy passed by the state and state lawmakers, I felt it was my duty to resign as marriage officer," he said. Town Clerk Flo Santini also resigned as marriage officer. Brabenec said anyone looking to get married in Deerpark will be given a list of nearby places to go.
