Bronx senior citizens may soon benefit from safer streets as part of a new program to cut pedestrian fatalities and injuries.

People dashing across the street to beat lights, cars stopping short of hitting people and traffic coming from every which way are common at Fordham Road and Webster Avenue, according to pedestrians.

Safely crossing the street can be especially difficult for slower elderly people.

The city's Department of Transportation will make Fordham one of the first Bronx neighborhoods to benefit from upgrades. Mott Haven may also be included. The upgrades include timing walk lights to last longer and adding more medians.

The DOT program is set to begin this year, however, the agency has not named the exact intersections that will see the changes.
