According to data from Dutchess County, the number of applicants for law
enforcement is up significantly.
News 12 is told the numbers from the last test in 2017 reflected 881 signups.
This year, nearly 1,400 people registered, and officials say the applicants are
more diverse, too.
Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro says he wants the police force to
reflect the community, saying in part, “The
fact that we were able to reach into neighborhoods and encourage people to
participate really speaks volumes about the connectivity we can make between
communities of different backgrounds and the people who are there to protect
and serve. And we have the best, second to none.”
At this point in the process, candidates have two tests to pass.
County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Shawn Castano says historically, “almost
half of the applicants fail the physically fitness portion of the processing.”
To help them succeed, the sheriff’s office is offering free fitness transition
and exam preparation.
"We definitely want to give any individual that's interested in a career
in law enforcement the best office,” says Lt. Castano.
The exam takes place on Sept. 18.
