It was an exciting day in Freehold on Tuesday as the mayor announced a new exhibition that will honor one of New Jersey’s favorite sons – music icon Bruce Springsteen.

“Everything I learned of deep importance, I learned in this town,” Springsteen said.

The “My Hometown” exhibit will be a collaboration between the borough and the Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music at Monmouth University. The exhibition will be home to a variety of items, including artifacts, photographs, concert footage, interviews and more.

Springsteen, who was on hand for the announcement, took some time to appreciate the moment.

"The bottom line is you can't get away from the fact that it feels bizarre. I sat three blocks from here, came up with a few songs, things that I liked. And the idea that 50 years later anyone was going to be interested in them at all - I mean what are the odds” Springsteen said. “It's been wonderful having this town be the center of my art and of my life. I look forward to doing that until they put me in a box.”

The current Freehold Fire Department building on Main Street will be renovated to accommodate the exhibit. The firehouse will be relocated as part of a redevelopment plan.

"My Hometown" is expected to open in mid-2024.
