The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is investigating a discrepancy in lab results concerning radioactive leaks at the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant.
Ever since leaks were discovered under the plant in 2005, samples of water have been tested by plant owner, Entergy, the NYS Health Department and the NRC. The lab that Entergy used found levels of the radioactive substance, strontium-90. However, the levels of strontium-90 were seven times higher in tests from the government labs, sparking the investigation. Entergy has suspended its contract with its lab.
There were concerns that the leaks found under the plant were seeping into the Hudson River. The government findings have been consistent with previous tests that found the substances were too small to be detected. The NRC says the radioactive leaks pose no public health risks.
