An ongoing fight over idling trains in Suffern has finally come to an end.
After constant complaints about the noise and pollution the trains create in the village, New Jersey Transit has agreed to decrease overnight train idling at its Suffern rail yard. Six of seven locomotives have been using ground power to keep their engines running while they are cleaned and serviced. The smaller of the train's two engines, which controls the train's lights, air-conditioning and heating, has now been turned off. As a result, noise and diesel emissions will be reduced by about a third, but not completely as some residents wanted.
A NJ Transit spokesperson says the older trains have to remain running because they do not restart easily once they are shut off.
