Fire victims take steps to try to retrieve belongings at Mona Lisa co-op board meeting

Some residents displaced by a fire at a Yonkers housing complex nearly three months ago took steps to potentially allow people to retrieve their personal belongings.
Residents that owned units voted Wednesday in a new co-op board and met with the new management company after a fire destroyed the Mona Lisa building on Bronx River Road on March 8.
None of the residents have been allowed back inside after management discovered asbestos in the building, but paperwork to expedite the remediation has not been filed as of this week, according to the city of Yonkers.
Those who were at the meeting told News 12 the meeting did not include renters and the board did not discuss plans to remove the asbestos or allow people to reclaim their personal belongings.
Lawyers for the new board have not yet responded to our request for comment.
