The Trump administration is leaving international students in a panic after canceling their visas.
Several schools say at least 70 students attending New York universities and colleges have had their student visas revoked by the Trump administration.
Some of the cancellations appear to be connected to things as minor as roommate disputes or as off-campus traffic tickets, while others appear to be connected to pro-Palestinian protests.
Students have been protesting the Trump administration at local schools like Yale and UConn.
The state department says there are many legal reasons why a student could have their visa revoked, such as expulsion, unauthorized employment or otherwise failing to maintain status.
If a student's visa is revoked, the student must leave the country immediately or risk deportation.
Congressman Jim Himes sat down with News 12's Rebecca Surran to talk more about it.
"Revoking a student visa is it is a true lose-lose right? Any university will tell you that the wonderful thing about foreign students is that they're generally not on financial aid, they pay full freight, that's great for our universities and number two. It's almost hard to name a innovative technology company or an innovative, pharmaceutical company or whatever that wasn't started or at least populated by people who come from India from China from Europe from Germany from Japan come here they learn and then they stay here," said Himes.
News 12 Connecticut will have more with Rep. Himes this weekend on Power & Politics.
