Seniors at an Orange County facility may soon not have a place to live due to potential staff shortages because of unvaccinated workers.
The majority of staff at the New Windsor Country Inn are not following the state's vaccine mandate. At last check, only 36% of the staff there are fully vaccinated, way below the Mid-Hudson average of 96%.
The deadline to get a shot was Thursday evening, and some wonder if the unvaccinated employees will lose their jobs Friday morning - and what it means for the residents.
The state Department of Health tells News 12 it's up to the Country Inn whether its employees will lose their jobs or not.
News 12 tried getting in touch with the building's supervisor to find out what they've decided, and is waiting to hear back.
About three weeks ago, administrators sent a letter to residents' families notifying them of a possible closure due to staffing shortages.
About a week later, they took to Facebook and said they were looking for new care aides and a food service manager.
New York state last updated its vaccination numbers for adult care facilities two days ago, so it's possible more than 36% are vaccinated now.
New Windsor Town Supervisor George Meyers says based on conversations he's had with administrators, it's unlikely.
"I did have a conversation with them and...didn't sound like it, but it didn't sound like it a few weeks ago in New York City where so many people weren't. Now all of a sudden they're getting vaccinated, so I don't know. They could be getting vaccinated today."
Meyers says he's spoken with several families, and they've essentially been told to come pick up their relatives.
The Country Inn remains tight lipped about it.
