Military police in Arizona say junior service members at West Point are being targeted in a phone scam.
According to police, the callers identify themselves as military leaders and tell the soldier that there is a problem with their paycheck.
In order to fix the problem and receive backpay, the soldier must send money via a money transfer app, such as Venmo – according to the scam. Those who question the money transfer are threatened with punishment.
New soldiers are being reminded that any pay issues would be handled in person – not through any app payment.
Those that may have received such a call from a scammer are urged to get into touch with local military or town police to file a report.
No West Point personnel are known to have been affected so far. The military police in Arizona just have identified a scam targeting soldiers in general.
