Manhole fire in Flatbush leave people without power ahead of potential heat wave

News 12 saw Con Edison crews outside of a local school, but it's unclear if the school was impacted.

The FDNY says it responded to Beverly Road in Flatbush just before 5 a.m. Friday for reports of a manhole fire. At one point in the day, at least 1,700 customers were without power. News 12 spoke with people, like Marvin Louis, who says he woke up to smoke. "I woke up around 5 a.m., and I was just coughing, but I thought I just had a cough. But then my dogs started barking, and there was smoke everywhere in the apartment," said Louis.
News 12 saw Con Edison crews outside of a local school, but it's unclear if the school was impacted.
News 12 spoke with people like Eden Gabay, who says not having air conditioning in Friday's heat was rough, and they're worried as temperatures rise.
“Tomorrow onwards, that's going to be really rough. Having said that, it was still, you know, a sauna without my consent," said Gabay.
The FDNY says the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Con Edison tells News 12 they're hoping to get power back up at some point tonight.
