A new panic button system was installed at the Mayimbe Deli & Grocery store on E. Third Street in Mount Vernon.
The donated technology was put in place after a suspect sent one worker to the hospital with a broken nose and threatened another worker with a butcher knife.
Surveillance camera images from the violent assault against workers at the store are stirring up fears and concerns throughout the Hudson Valley among other bodega workers and owners.
Members of the Bronx-based association, United Bodegas of America, are offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest of the man accused in the attack on March 12.
"This man is dangerous, he's armed and he continues to threaten the lives of these bodega workers in this store," said UBA spokesman Fernando Mateo.
He says the argument started because the man didn't have enough money to buy a $1.25 cigarette lighter.
"We know that he lives in the neighborhood, we have a picture of who he is, yet, there's been no arrest and that concerns us because there will be a fatality if we don't address this immediately," Mateo added.
Butch Thomas, owner of technology and security company Virtuous Systems, donated the panic button alert system to the deli. He says the technology is the first of its kind to be installed at a store in Westchester County.
"When you press it, it immediately sends a signal right to all of the authorities or the systems that we in place for it to ring to. And that way, they get an answer, they see where the emergency is happening, and they can respond to it," Thomas explained.
Mateo says the attacker continues to call the store on a regular basis, threatening to kill the employee that he chased with the butcher knife.
