Mount Vernon officials confirmed that two teens were stabbed in two separate stabbings on Thursday afternoon.

The two different incidents happened within two hours of each other at two different locations that are only minutes apart.

The first one happened right before class was let out Thursday at Mount Vernon High School. The school district says a 16-year-old student injured a 15-year-old student during that incident.

The victim is in stable condition and the other student was arrested.

Two hours later, on Gramatan Avenue, officials say a 13-year-old was stabbed by a 14-year-old.

Police say the 13-year-old was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening.

The 14-year-old suspect was not in custody as of Friday night, according to detectives.

"It's devastating that something else happened," said Mount Vernon mother Chanel Kershaw.

Parents in the area said more police presence is needed to curb the violence in the city.

"They should monitor, be around the schools more because I just don't see them too much. I don't really see too much police posted up everywhere," said mother of two, Sonia Regis.

The mayor says they are working with the school district on helping young people find alternatives to the violence.

“Our society as a whole is fractured, and our young people are not exempt,” stated Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard. This is an example of how social, emotional, family and mental health challenges are impacting our youth people. The city will work with the Mount Vernon City School District and larger community to help our young people identify alternatives to violence in dealing with disagreements and conflict. We are praying for the speedy recovery of the injured student," said Mayor Patterson-Howard.

Also, the school district is increasing security at Mount Vernon High School.

"There have been rumors and social media reports as to further student violence today at Mount Vernon High School after yesterday’s assault. Reports of a female student being stabbed are not true. There was an unrelated minor altercation on a school bus with no serious injuries after school."

"Today, there was an increased security presence as well as a Mount Vernon Police Department presence at Mount Vernon High School throughout the day. We appreciate our partnership with the Mount Vernon Police. Additional school district security guards, including a supervisor of security, school district administrators, and a clinical team of the district’s counselors were at the school. This increased presence of school security, administrators and clinical team will continue at the school next week."

"Principal Dr. Pauline Pearce and her administrative team met with teachers before the school day to discuss safety measures. Dr. K. Veronica Smith, acting superintendent, and Mark Raimondi, associate superintendent for operations and accountability, were also present at the school at the beginning of the day to provide support," says Dr. K. Veronica Smith.
