Voters in the New Castle Fire District are being asked to approve a $15 million bond referendum for a 13,000-square-foot addition to the current fire station.
The current fire house was built in 1954 and expanded in 1979, but more room is needed for the new equipment.
"The newer trucks are coming out larger than the old trucks,” New Castle Fire District Commissioner Dwight Smith told News 12. “We cannot put some of the trucks in the old bays because they are just too big."
The current standard for space in stations between trucks is about 8 ft, plus the decontamination area which the station also lacks.
"We have one washing machine,” Smith added. “It’s in the basement and it only handles one piece of turn out gear at a time."
The expansion, which would cost taxpayers an additional $282 per year, would create a decontamination area right where the trucks pull in, while also providing washing machines, room for storage and training.
Voting for the referendum will take place on April 25 from 12 p.m. till 9 p.m. at the fire station.
