Bronx officials flanked by Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Governor Eliot Spitzer broke ground Friday on a new Metro-North station near Yankee Stadium.

Officials say the E. 153rd station is a win-win situation for everyone. Elliot Sander, CEO of the MTA, says it is estimated that 6,000 to 10,000 fans per game will travel to Yankee Stadium via Metro-North. He says the new station will provide suburban fans with the option to leave their cars at home and take the train.

The mayor hopes the addition of Metro-North in the area will mean fewer cars. He says the area could use less congestion because of the poor air quality.

The new Metro-North station is expected to be up and running in time for the 2009 season.
