The district said in a statement Tuesday that its investigation into the alleged conduct by some players at Newburgh Free Academy last month led them to the “difficult decision” to cancel the rest of the season.
“While I regret this outcome, it is a necessary step as we continue to gather information, support those impacted and ensure accountability for those involved,” says Superintendent Jackielyn Campbell-Manning.
The school official also says the case has also been referred to law enforcement. Orange County District Attorney Dave Hoovler confirms to News 12 his office is investigating the allegations.
Authorities have yet to reveal any details about what may have occurred.
The district says their student pep rally and homecoming dance, which were both rescheduled at the onset of the probe, will still be held next week.
