New York Attorney General Letitia James' office has opened an investigation into the murder-suicide of a New City family over the weekend.
James' office is required by state law to probe every incident in which a police officer or other member of law enforcement was involved in a death.
"Under the law, the officer may be on-duty or off-duty, and the decedent may be armed or unarmed. Also, the decedent may or may not be in custody or incarcerated. If OSI’s assessment indicates an officer may have caused the death, OSI proceeds to conduct a full investigation of the incident," James wrote in a release.
Clarkstown police officers received a call from the Bronxville Police Department around 12:15 a.m. Saturday asking for a wellness check at the New City home of Bronxville Police Sgt. Watson Morgan, who had not shown up for his 11:30 p.m. shift.
Clarkstown officers arrived at the home and found Morgan, 49, had fatally shot his wife Ornela, 43, and their two kids, 12-year-old Gabriel and 10-year-old Liam, in the head before turning the weapon on himself.
