NY soldiers to provide security at inauguration
Some 200 local soldiers are preparing to deploy to Washington, D.C. in order to ensure safety during Barack Obama?s historic inauguration Tuesday.
Members of the National Guard from New York will depart from Camp Smith in Peekskill Sunday to join nearly 9,000 servicemen and women in the capital.
"[It?s] not every day that we participate in something like this,? says Sgt. 1st Class Ryan Wolfe, of the Army National Guard.
Once in Washington, D.C., the soldiers will go over emergency plans and prepare for about 1 million people who are expected to descend on the city for the festivities.
Task Force Commander Lt. Colonel Ronnie Ridner says while many of the soldiers have provided security and crowd support for big events in the past, this is a once in a lifetime experience.
"Very glad to be a part of it," Ridner says. "Some day [I?ll] look back and tell my grandkids, I was a part of that."
