Police arrested and charged 73-year-old Jeffrey Kolin in connection with his wife’s murder after officers found 77-year-old Marsha Greenberg unconscious and unresponsive inside their Pelham Parkway apartment.
Officers responded to a 911 call around 7:30 a.m. Monday for an assault at an apartment building on the corner of Brady and Barnes avenues, then found Greenberg with head trauma.
“It’s honestly really sad,” said Louis Ortega, a neighbor who said he knew the victim. “I didn’t think it was that bad that something like that would happen.”
Police said Greenberg was taken to Jacobi Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Multiple neighbors told News 12 the woman lived in her apartment with her husband, was in declining physical health and appeared to be struggling with mental illness.
One neighbor said he would often hear the wife screaming at her husband during all hours of the night.
"They’re known for having issues,” Ortega said. “Here and there we wouldn’t see them passing by. Sometimes they would be in an argument.”
But Ortega said he would never suspect any physical violence from the couple.
“[Kolin] seemed very loving of [Greenberg], very calm,” Ortega said.
Kolin is charged with murder, manslaughter, strangulation and criminal possession of a weapon.
As of Monday night, the motive was still unknown. The investigation is ongoing.
