The Somers Volunteer Fire Department says an off-brand rechargeable battery was the cause of a small fire that recently occurred on Wood Street.

Fires involving battery technology are on the rise locally and nationwide, according to the department.

Authorities urge residents who use rechargeable batteries to choose certified products and always recycle them properly.
