A rally was held Saturday demanding justice for an unarmed man who was fatally shot by an off-duty police officer in the Bronx.
The family of Fermin Arzu gathered at Al Sharpton?s National Action Network in Harlem and thanked the community for its support. Family members say Arzu?s death has ?just been a nightmare.?
Police say off-duty NYPD Officer Raphael Lora shot and killed Arzu in the Longwood section of the Bronx last Friday after Arzu tried to drive away when he hit a parked car. Sources say Arzu was drunk at the time of the accident. However, family members say that makes no difference in the case.
At a vigil for Arzu, Nicole Bell, fiancé of Sean Bell, who was shot by police, came to show her support for the Arzu family. Sharpton says both cases are the same and demanded justice and action. ?Procedures need to be put in place that respects the lives of our people,? shouted Sharpton.
Sharpton and Arzu?s family members say they will not rest until justice is served. Arzu?s funeral is scheduled for Saturday and his body will be flown back to his native Honduras on Monday for burial.
