With the news this week that on-time performance of many major airlines leaves little to be desired, comes a proposal from the FAA to cap peak flights coming into Newark Liberty International Airport.
Thomas Sullivan, a spokesperson for Quiet Rockland, say the FAA plan may reduce delays and prevent the need for a radical increase in the number of flights over Rockland, an increase his group opposes.
But Rockland County Executive Scott Vanderhoef says the cap is an FAA sleight of hand.
?It's not going to do anything for Rockland County and it's a temporary fix as they've noted for their effort at redesign,? says Vanderhoef.
Vanderhoef says the flight caps could cause a new problem. He says with less planes at peak hours, there will be more planes at others hours and could mean more flights coming to Newark, and then over Rockland.
Rockland County is suing the FAA over the flight redesign plan.
The FAA plan for its New York-New Jersey-Philadelphia Metropolitan Area Airspace redesign would increase the number of flights over Rockland by 300 to 400 planes a day in a few years. To view Vanderhoef's interview about the flight caps, to go channel 612 on your iO digital cable box and click on iO Extra.
