Spotted lanternflies infesting Westchester County, according to experts

Westchester County is currently infested with spotted lanternflies, an invasive species from Asia, according to the head horticulturalist, Hillary Jufer, with the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Westchester County.
The spotted lanternfly is reported to have been discovered in Pennsylvania in 2014, according to the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Westchester County.
Jufer says the bugs act like hitchhikers, hopping on vehicles and trains to move around.
To stop the spread, the Westchester County Park's Department loaned vacuums to a variety of local parks and agencies to suck up the bugs.
"We're here today to try and vacuum them off of the trees which of course directly removes adults from the population, but also...basically getting them off the landscape before they have the chance to lay eggs," said Leah Cass, with the department.
The Department of Environmental Conservation advises anyone who doesn't have a vacuum to report it and prevent the spread.
