Residents of a Suffern neighborhood that was hit hard by Hurricane Irene say the federal government isn't doing enough to help them with the recovery.

Some homeowners on Lonergan Drive say they have maxed out their credit cards to make urgent repairs.

Christian Rene applied for aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) several weeks ago and has yet to receive assistance. He says his basement was completely destroyed, but he had both a homeowner's policy and flood insurance.

Resident Roy Tschudy says flood damage aside, the neighborhood suffered an environmental disaster. He says floodwaters were polluted with petroleum, fertilizers and animal waste, and it's taken a toll on people's health. He and some of his neighbors want the federal government not just to pay for the damage, but to buy them out so they could move.

"There is not one person who's expressed to me they don't want a buyout," Tschudy says.

FEMA community representatives toured Lonergan Drive last Sunday. They continue to stress that those who need help should register with the agency.
