Putnam Valley is still under a state of emergency due to the severe storms Sunday that flooded out the area.
News 12’s Jade Nash spoke with Town Supervisor Jacqueline Annabi, who said it has “never had this much rain in such a short period of time.”
Town officials are starting to access the damage, which could add up to millions of dollars. Annabi says the “very little tax base” won’t be able to afford the price of repairs on their own.
“We're going to need governmental help from our state and federal agencies," she said.
Highway Superintendent Shawn Keeler thinks it could take some time for crews to repair certain parts of their infrastructure.
“I would say six months,” said Keeler, who added that structural engineers would have to make an assessment.
One area they will be looking at is New Hill Road. A bridge washed away during the storm, leaving residents who live nearby stranded.
Officials say they're coming up with a temporary solution that will allow these residents to leave.
Annabi says resident should “take plenty of pictures” to document damage to their homes.
She says the more details residents have, the easier it will be for them to get reimbursed.
