News 12 is learning more about the ongoing water crisis in South Blooming Grove after Orange County officials said the rapidly growing village is running out of water.

The once rural village is experiencing an influx of new people from surrounding communities moving in. While many longtime residents don’t like the changes, News 12 learned this week that there's a bigger problem in the village. According to the county Health Department, the municipality only has enough water for about half its residents.

County officials say the rest is being tanked in, as seen in newly obtained resident surveillance video that captured 58 water trucks driving through one South Blooming Grove neighborhood last December.

Village officials say they’re working to fix the problem. Budget documents obtained by News 12 show South Blooming Grove has allotted $50,000 a year since 2023 to truck water in.

The county says it has “serious concerns” about the amount of development and apparently, so does the state. The Department of Environmental Conservation issued stop work orders at two massive housing projects in the village, Clovewood and Prospect Gardens. Each would add hundreds of homes.

The DEC is looking into resident complaints that Prospect Gardens is allegedly continuing to work without the proper permits. News 12 drove by on Thursday and saw gated security and a moving excavator behind a fence.

South Blooming Grove is also under review by the state comptroller's office after village officials approved a near $1 million no-bid sanitation contract to add a second weekly pick-up and residents questioned its legality.
