A nonprofit is helping the wheelchair-bound child of a Vietnam veteran get a little bit more access in his life.
Ryan Dipilo's father was exposed to Agent Orange, a chemical used in warfare, during the Vietnam War. Many veterans who were exposed experience health issues or have children born with birth defects.
Dipilo has spina bifida, a birth defect that impacts the spine. He loves to watch fire trucks line up outside of his house for an annual parade in Ossining, but his current setup doesn't have the room for his wheelchair to go onto the porch.
The downstate chapter of Purple Heart Homes is renovating it for no cost.
This is the first time the organization has remodeled a home for the child of a veteran.
