The town of Clarkstown recently installed nine new yield signs in Valley Cottage and Congers to boost pedestrian safety.

Officials say a lack of yield signs has been an issue for years. Most recently, a mother was nearly struck by a car while trying to cross with family on Lake Road in Congers.

"People do speed here and that's the essence to slow people down,” says Town Councilman Mike Graziano. "Slow down when you see a pedestrian crossing the crosswalks. It needs to be common sense.”

The yield signs are now in place, with two along New Lake Road in Valley Cottage and seven along Lake Road in Congers. But so far, some pedestrians claim they do not work.

"It’s really hard. I know they put in the new signs, but I don't really see a difference,” says Nicole Demaio, of Congers.

News 12 is told if the signs don’t prove to be effective, police officers will be around to enforce pedestrian safety.
