There's a call for action to address the surge of violent crime across the state.
Assembly Minority Leader William Barclay and a number of his Republican colleagues introduced the "Restore Order Anti-Crime Initiative" bills.
They don't think the current punishments allowed under state law fit the crimes being committed.
They're calling for tougher sentencing and stricter rules for parole -- as well as a no-bail option for gun-related crimes.
"I think the police have a very difficult time, you know, policing unfortunately. But there's no doubt that these soft-on-crime pieces of legislation coming out are resulting in these higher crimes rates. So we want to turn that back and push back," says Barclay.
News 12 reached out to a number of Democrat lawmakers about this and is waiting to hear their thoughts.
