Hudson Valley politicians said they participated in a briefing with Gov. Kathy Hochul following the shootings in Minnesota. Matt Slater, an assemblymember who represents the 94th District shared what was discussed. "It also provided insight as to things that are going to be changing down the line, some of the safety assessments that are gonna occur," Slater said. Slater couldn't disclose what specific changes are going to occur, but Assemblymember Gary Pretlow said the measures are necessary because he's been a victim of political violence in the past, too. "Once when I was on the City Council, there was someone making death threats against me and also once when I was a member of the Legislature," Pretlow said. As News 12 has reported, Vance Boelter is accused of shooting and killing state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband at their home on Saturday. Boelter is also accused of shooting state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife at their home, too. Both Hudson Valley politicians said the alleged actions are appalling. "We do not assassinate people we do not agree with," Slater said. "The constitution puts in how to remove a legislator - that's through the ballot box. It's not through the box of bullets," Pretlow said. As the nation learns more about the shootings, security expert Kenneth Madden shared ways that lawmakers can protect themselves. "In their homes, by using better lighting, by having motion security cameras, alerts to their phones, conventional alarm systems," Madden said. Madden encouraged county legislators and above to have security detail with them as well.
