A veteran Middletown police detective has been suspended without pay following an incident that occurred while he was off duty.
Detective Fredrick Slanovec is accused of having a physical altercation with a 14-year-old male high school student last Saturday at the Olde Erie Restaurant.
The detective was initially suspended with pay, but that was changed Thursday night when the Middletown Police Commission held a special meeting to file departmental charges against the detective and potentially seek his termination.
A formal hearing will be scheduled in the future.
The Orange County DA's Office will determine if criminal charges will be filed.
