The Nassau Police Department honored 40 police officers who died in the line of duty.
Commissioner Patrick Ryder says Long Islanders must never forget the sacrifices of those who serve.
Families of the fallen officers also paid tribute Wednesday to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
"I want people to know his heart and know how much he cared for the community and cared for people and to just be kind to everyone and smile and do your best and just lend that hand when you think, because you never know how much people might need it and that's unexpected," said Emma Perlungher, daughter of Matthew Perlungher.
Floral tributes were also placed at the memorial.
