A person of interest is in custody in connection to the shooting of an off-duty police officer from Deer Park, a source tells News 12.
The 26-year-old officer remained on life support Monday after he was shot in Brooklyn over the weekend after police say he arranged on social media to meet up with the seller of a car in East New York on Saturday evening.
He and a relative showed up and attempted to purchase the car. That's when he was shot by the seller, who pulled out a gun and tried to rob him.
Authorities say the officer was shot in the head and is in the hospital in critical condition. According to the NYPD, the officer is a five-year veteran of the force who works patrol.
Deer Park residents who did not know the officer said Sunday they were still in shock.
A congregation at the Islamic Center of Deer Park prayed for the NYPD officer on Sunday.
Abdul Razzaq Aziz, the imam at the center, said the officer was not a member of the congregation, but he was of Muslim faith and lives in Deer Park.
According to New York City Mayor Eric Adams' office, the officer is married with children.
