Rockland County union representatives tonight are blasting Rockland County's proposed budget after learning that hundreds might lose their jobs if officials approve it. County Executive Scott Vanderhoef (R-Rockland) announced the plan Monday, saying 544 workers could be laid off to close a $52 million budget gap. Union leaders say employees have already agreed to certain cuts, including the elimination of pay raises for 2011 and 2012. They say workers in entry-level jobs will likely be the first to be fired. Under the proposal, layoffs will start on Aug. 1, 2012. The Rockland County Legislature has until December of this year to pass it.
