Community leaders are demanding NYPD policy changes after an unarmed man was shot to death by a rookie officer in Brooklyn last week.
Rev. Al Sharpton is pushing for a full investigation into the death of 28-year-old Akai Gurley, as well as changes to police training and procedures.
Authorities say Officer Peter Liang fired one shot at Gurley inside a dimly lit stairwell in a public housing complex while on patrol in Brooklyn's East New York section.
NYC Police Commissioner Bill Bratton says the officer involved has been placed on modified duty, and that he has been stripped of his gun and badge.
Authorities say Gurley had been visiting his girlfriend when he was fatally shot. He leaves behind a 2-year-old daughter.
The organization North Americans Against a Police State held a vigil on Saturday, calling the shooting "senseless."
