Police were made aware of a potential social media threat against North Rockland School District.
Officers say they were able to quickly find the girl who allegedly made the post on Thursday evening.
Police discovered the threat was not credible, but the 16-year-old girl, from West Haverstraw, was charged with making a terroristic threat.
"Very scared, very concerned. I know this is happening around the country but of course, you don't expect it in your backyard," says Rockland County Mother Aisha Bailey.
Families in the county tell News 12 that the entire situation put them on edge.
"It's not right. It's scaring all the kids, it's scaring all the teachers," says Rockland County resident Jessica Langer.
The Haverstraw Police Department released the following statement on the incident:
"The Town of Haverstraw Police Department is dedicated to keeping our students and staff safe at all of our schools, and we will continue to investigate any claim or threat of violence with all of our manpower and resources. We will also not tolerate individuals looking to put fear into the community and we will charge them with all appropriate charges and make sure they are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."
