Volunteer firefighters parade in Wallkill canceled during state police probe into missing funds

A popular firefighters parade organized by a volunteer department in the Town of Wallkill has been canceled during a state police probe into missing funds.
The Washington Heights Fire Department issued a statement on Facebook Wednesday saying it's being forced to cancel the event and can’t say why.
“It’s with a heavy heart that we are forced to cancel the parade to be held on Saturday, September 23, for reasons that we cannot at this time share. We believe that it is in the best interests of everyone involved to do so,” said the department.

Sources tell News 12 that at least $30,000 meant for the parade is missing.
The event was part of the Orange County Volunteer Firemen’s Association 108th Annual Convention. The OCVFA issued a statement on Tuesday.
“We are sure most of you by now have heard rumors that the parade was cancelled, and we are unfortunately confirming that rumor,” said OCVFA. “Please know that the OCVFA has not been involved in anything that may be rumored.”
The Washington Heights Fire Department declined News 12's requests for additional comment but said in its statement online that it is working to refund any prepaid money.
“We are extremely sorry for the inconvenience and understand that so many people have spent a great deal of time planning this event,” said the department.” Once we can provide a proper explanation to everyone, we will do so.”
