Environmentalists
in Rockland County say there has been zero road fatalities this year of snapping
turtles migrating across
Western Highway.
The Turtles of Western Highway organization say
pregnant snapping turtles migrated across the highway to lay their eggs back
starting in March.
Lots of credit goes to the
turtle crossing guard volunteers who helped them on their safe journey.
There was one turtle injury
though. The turtle suffered a broken femur, cracked
pelvic bone, and severely cracked shell after being was struck by a car in a
rainstorm. The turtle had 35 intact eggs ready to bury in a nest.
The turtle was treated by a veterinarian and will
be rehabilitating with the Turtles of Western Highway for at least one year.
